Ferry to Africa (Tunisia)

Steve thought we'd packed a lot - well should have seen the cars and vans; they were stacked up.  Both on and off the ferry 'Splendid' was total ciaos, people everywhere and cars gunning for any open space.  At least the sun set was beautiful and calming.

Road to Genova via Geneva

Camping at Lake Geneva was great, a little on the pricey side but then you get what you pay for. Here we have Suili relaxing by the water edge, and prepping up some quick snacks to wash down with the G&T's

A few drinks later and the games begin, I spy.., the big think, SA flag comes out and the sparklers are lit.

Back on the road towards Italy, Suili puts pedal to the metal. See the amazing glacier near Mont Blanc   and we queue to get into the Mont Blanc tunnel. (Super long tunnel by the way)

The first shot is of Mabel's lights on in the tunnel, see the light guard reflections on the tunnel walls.

On the Italy side its all sunny and the smiles are back. The northern part is pretty amazing  with the rugged hills and tunnels everywhere. Our first 30 minutes drive in Italy was mostly spent in tunnels

The GPS leads us into Genova after 350 miles or so on the road.

Leaving the UK - 9 August 2010
Reims Cathedral
Above the 4am start with our first point of call the MK concrete cows. Bernie does Dover and Suili enjoys a bit of sun coming through the ferry window, with the white cliffs only just visible in the background.  A quick stop at Reims Cathedral and then off to our hotel. We had to settle for camping as the hotel was full.

The Farewell Party -  7 August 2010

"Places to go & things to do"

Given that we we going to be away for so long there was really only one way to make an exit, and that is done by inviting your friends and  family lay add some nibbles and drink and let the rest sort itself out.

We just wanted to thank everyone for giving us such a great send off and all the wonderful gifts. We always knew it was going to be difficult to leave such a great bunch for friends behind, but we just didn’t realise it would be sooooo hard. Nevertheless as this update comes in we’re halfway across the Europe and you know how it goes. “We’ve got places to go and things to do” so unfortunately we must dash for now J. Enjoy the photo’s.

*PS. Mixer the bear is going to change his name in France. For now names being considered are Bernie,  Dazza  and Claude ... watch this space.

Forest of Dean test run - May 2010
As it pans out the original tent delivered was not the correct one.  The new one looks exactly the same. It has a little extension piece that allows us to connect a side skirt or curtain  for the added room or cover.  It takes a little longer to setup but it does have the benefit of the extra room or awning for the places we choose to stay a little longer.

"Its dry but you can drink it"
As a bit of a bonus the Engel fridge arrived in time for the trip so we could put it through its paces.  At -22ºC the Savanna's were chilled and ice cold in no time, and was drunk in even quicker time.  (Thirsty folk 1 - 1 Engel)

The tent arrives & raised flooring goes into Mabel - May 2010
Prep work has been pretty slow this month, we  managed to build a raised floor from wood which increases our storage space without having to stack everything on top of each other, we'll have to see how this works out in the long run.

The tent is really cool, we set it up with the help from the folks at Crowley's & Co. It didn't take too long for Suili to check out the new  accommodation and settle in. I now struggle to get her  out of the tent :-)

Mabel earns her stripes - April 2010
Sourcing the finest Zebra hide to help Mabel blend into the African environment she will find herself in was no easy task. After spending a week on the spoor of a small  Zebra herd we called "Stripes", our efforts were well rewarded.

Guess Gucci and Prada will now need to go for the spotted and print look for their winter collection

Muddy Mabel - March 2010
After the first visit to Whaddon, we felt that Mabel did not get all the mud she deserved. This time round there was no such problem.

Mable soon had a chocolate brown tan with streaks of pure  brown mud stripes reaching all the way up to the roof.  Her headlights soon became blinkers in true horse racing fashion after taking on the first of many muddy challenges.

We soon discovered that mud is your friend and you can have loads of fun.  Knowing that were many friendly 4x4ers around we were a little braver than normal and only needed the help of one friendly chap from Northampton to help get us out of the goo.

Initial day out with Mabel - February 2010
The first trip out to Whaddon 4x4 track was an exciting and a little nervy experience at times as it was our first time off-road with Mabel.

Looking at the other folks with their "super digger"  type tyres and mud all over the show, I was a little concerned that Mabel's Marie Biscuit wheels would not cut the  mu
dstard. All worries was put to bed as she just kept climbing the steep hills and survived the muddy tracks.

"I saw the white of her eyes"
That being said  it was hair raising at times as Suili will confirm picking the route that looks the easiest way out will more than likely pan out to be the toughest option.  I saw the white of her eyes as a perfectly straight forward and flat 2 track path turned into 4x4 hell or heaven depending on your personal view.  One fellow didn't quite make it , with his car bursting into flames.  We will return
